Dorothea Erxleben Guest Professorship
The Dorothea Erxleben Visiting Professorship at the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg serves to promote female careers within the framework of university teaching careers.
For the academic years 2023/24 and 2024/25, Dr. Anne Maass, an outstanding female scientist, was appointed to the Dorothea Erxleben Visiting Professorship.
Since 2019, she has been head of the "Multimodal Neuroimaging" working group at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Magdeburg.
Dr. Anne Maass researches the molecular basis of normal and pathological cognitive ageing in the human brain. Using magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography, she investigates how pathological changes in our brain affect its functioning. Her aim is to identify factors that could
contribute to preventing or slowing down Alzheimer's disease. She was awarded the Outstanding Woman in Neuroscience Award in 2022 for her research.
Anne Maass has also been a member of the steering committee of the Cluster of Excellence initiative "Cognitive Vitality" since 2022. She is currently conducting research as part of the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center SFB1436 "Neuronal Resources of Cognition" (first funding period 2021-2024), which aims to uncover the performance limits of the human brain and explore methodological approaches to improve this performance.
The new Dorothea Erxleben Visiting Professor began her work at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Institute of Biology in December 2023. This appointment will enable Anne Maass to further advance her research in Magdeburg. The use of Europe's most powerful 7 Tesla MRI scanner, which is located at the University of Magdeburg, is important here, as is the proximity to the DZNE. She also passes on her knowledge to students as part of her teaching, including in the Master's degree course in Integrative Neuroscience, which she studied herself.
